Thailand is looking beyond its traditional tourism gateways as the government moves to strengthen air connectivity to regional destinations and unlock new opportunities for local tourism growth.
The Transport Ministry has called on Thai Airways International to expand services to secondary airports across the country, a move that reflects Thailand’s broader effort to spread tourism benefits more evenly beyond established hubs such as Bangkok and Phuket. The initiative comes as authorities seek to encourage visitors to explore a wider range of destinations while supporting local economies that have long remained outside the spotlight.
Expanding Air Links to Secondary Destinations
Under the plan, Thai Airways has been encouraged to increase domestic flights to regional destinations including Krabi, Ubon Ratchathani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Authorities are also exploring opportunities for more direct international connections from nearby markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong, making it easier for travelers to reach regional destinations without passing through Bangkok.
Officials believe improved connectivity could help introduce international visitors to parts of Thailand that offer rich cultural heritage, natural attractions, and authentic local experiences. Easier access to these destinations is expected to strengthen tourism businesses, create jobs, and encourage visitor spending in communities that have traditionally received fewer international arrivals.
The initiative forms part of a wider aviation strategy aimed at reinforcing Thailand’s position as a leading regional aviation hub. Alongside expanded flight networks, the government is investing in airport upgrades and service improvements to support growing passenger demand and enhance connectivity across the country.
Hua Hin has emerged as one of the destinations expected to benefit from these efforts, with authorities pushing to restore international flight services to the popular seaside town. The move is seen as an important step toward attracting more overseas visitors and supporting tourism growth beyond Thailand’s busiest destinations.
